4 hour class
Repurposing Metals: Keep the memory - change the shape
Instructor: Lia Terni
Bring your old and broken yellow gold and silver jewelry, only the ones you know you are not wearing again. We will test and find out the carat of your metal, discovering the purity of each piece. Then you will repurpose this idle jewelry into an ingot to take home.
Eco-conscious and sustainable jeweler Lia Terni is going to show you how to melt this down and shape your own gold and/or silver bar. You can wear it, keep it in your safe or bring it to another workshop to repurpose it further. Let's get creative!
Prerequisite: Fabrication and Soldering Level 1
Students are responsible for bringing their own metal to melt. Metal should be yellow gold or silver (not plated or filled) and students will test metal during class, classify it into different carats, and separate jewelry from stones or other materials. Each student will then choose up to 5 grams of metal to melt down into a single ingot. Opportunities will be provided for experienced students to come into the studio and melt down any additional metal in a future class.
